PRELUDES FOR PEOPLE IN MY LIFE
Prelude No. 2 in D Major
for Ava Balsley

Composed: July 2007
About the Dedication:

Ava was Disneyland crush number two and unfortunately everything ended up turning into a big slice of drama pie. I remember the first time we met. It was her first Main Street East shift and I was the lead on duty. After checking her in, I made it a priority to make sure that things were going smoothly for her. Sometimes being in a new area is overwhelming and I didn’t have much to do so I spent most of the shift talking to her and helping her around the store. She was a lot of fun and had a bright personality equal to her astonishing looks.

She started to have more shifts in my area and our friendship began to grow. We started hanging out in the park before and after our shifts and she came over to my house a few times. In typical Jared fashion this “situation” started getting into murky water and I never clearly defined it. She held my hand on the Disney roller coasters, was super flirty, and frequently made physical contact. I even cooked her dinner after we finished working at 3am. At this point I definitely had developed feelings towards her and grown quite fond of her company. After receiving what I perceived to be returned signals, I remember questioning what the hell was going on.

I neglected to mention before that she was technically dating someone the entire time this was all happening. He was another Cast Member who usually worked in Emporium. We trained together and were hired on the same day. I did know about their relationship the entire time, but since we were just hanging out I didn’t think anything of it. Around the time I started getting feelings for Ava, I found out her boyfriend was cheating on her with another cast member in my area. Long story short, cast member girl gave me proof of the relationship and I tried to tell Ava before she got hurt. It seemed like a good idea at the time but things didn’t go well and everything blew up in my face. She didn’t believe me so I arranged the break schedule so that Ava and CM girl could talk to each other. It still didn’t work out and it was definitely a drama-rama. When I look back on this time in my life, I laugh at how I handled this situation. There is nothing much I can say other than I was 20 years old and infatuated.

Caryn and I Tower of Terror

A is for Ava

Ava didn’t talk to me for a couple of weeks but we eventually cleared the air. Things weren’t the same and she quit the following month. I still don’t know why she quit but I heard through the Disney rumor mill that her relationship finally blew up. I never talked to her again and ultimately found out that she got married and had two kids.

About the Work:

This prelude was composed in July of 2007 during the peak of my time with Ava. We planned a visit to Disneyland together for our next day off and I wanted to give her something to show her how I felt. The trip was in two days, so I quickly wrote and recorded the piece. I showed it to her while walking in the esplanade on our way to the California Adventure main entrance. She really liked it and gave me a huge hug.

The piece is very minimalistic in nature and slowly builds upon an ostinato major seventh arpeggio. The opening motive reflects Ava walking in sunlight that flows throughout her hair. It is very rhythmic and the performer should bring out the subtle changes that occur. The work is in ternary form and the sections are distinguished between a brief shift to the parallel minor and back. It is meant to be a very bright and happy piece (especially so in measures 58-69) and the performer should always try to convey that. Feel free to improvise your own short cadenza using the chords outlined.
